The Panama-flagged, Japanese-owned ship ran aground in the single-lane stretch of the canal on March 23, blocking international trade for six days.

Egypt has announced plans to widen and deepen the southern part of the Suez Canal where a hulking vessel ran aground and closed off the crucial waterway in March.

The head of the Suez Canal Authority, Lieutenant General Osama Rabe, announced details of the plan in a televised ceremony in the canal’s city of Ismailia. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi and top government officials attended the ceremony. The plan includes widening the canal’s southernmost stretch by about 40 metres to the east, on the side of the Sinai Peninsula, Rabei said. That segment would also be deepened to nearly 23 metres, from the current 20 metres. That part of the canal is 30 kilometres long.

The plan also includes a 10-kilometre-long extension of a second lane of the waterway that opened in 2015. That would bring the double-lane stretch of the canal to 82 kilometres, allowing more vessels to pass through the canal.

The federal budget is 'deeply worrying': Kenny | Sky News AustraliaTonight's federal budget is 'deeply worrying' given structural reform seems to have been 'put on the backburner' in favour of ever-increasing government spending, according to Sky News host Chris Kenny.\n\n'I find this budget deeply worrying and I reckon most of you would too,' Mr Kenny said.\n\n'We will have the largest deficit in the nation's history confirmed – even though it won't be as deep as forecast only a few months ago.\n\n'Structural reform seems to have been put on the backburner in favour of ever-increasing government spending – putting government at the centre of everything – just like a Labor government would.\n\n'We have got to build more self-reliance and personal responsibility into our system and at the moment – the pandemic is providing the perfect excuse and the added impetus – we are only getting increased involvement and spending from government.\n\n'Just because the pandemic didn't hit us as bad as we feared, doesn't mean the recovery will be as painless as we hope.\n\n'In the meantime, you might as well lap up all the extra spending and announceables tonight, because your kids and their kids will be paying for it.'
