The Opposition Leader defending his party's candidate in Melbourne, after it was revealed he had made inappropriate jokes about rape, lesbians and Catholics on social media.

"This Jessica Whelan, she said what she believes now, and it reflects on what she believes now," he said.

"What our fellow said, was he said it seven years ago, when he was 22, and he's clearly regretted and apologised for it.""Why is it that Labor are applying a double standard when it comes to their candidate in Melbourne?" he said on Channel Nine. "They're calling for Liberal candidates that have done wrong things that are wrong to be disendorsed.

"Yet when it comes to Labor candidates who've done things that are wrong, they're happy to stand by them."Because the nominations process is over, their names will remain on the ballot papers handed to voters in those seats.

‘Sticks with’ means ‘accepted resignation of’ in room now, does it? Biased accidentally on purpose now?

Bad error of judgment billshortenmp

🤡 👉🏻👌🏻

Well it's seems a problem with labor doesn't it, even child porn. When will Bill be held accountable for the rape of that woman?

Bill Cosby wasn't stopped by the media he was stopped by a rape joke. Bill Cosby wasn't stopped by the media he was stopped by a rape joke. Bill Cosby wasn't stopped by the media he was stopped by a rape joke.

I don’t think he made the joke. As I understand he retweeted a joke made by someone else.

I remember Michael Mccormack's homophobic rant. I'm sure you do too. I'm sure you allowed him off with an apology.

billshortenmp Sorry Bill. He may be a good candidate now, but the message, if you continue to endorse him, is that sexism is ok in young men. Sexism must be stopped in the young. Send a strong message. Luke Creasey could make a new career out of teaching the cost of sexism.

Wonder how many people here twisting this to Shorten supporting rape still think Falau was unfairly fired.

love the green tie.

Support for a young man that made mistakes in his youth (7Years ago). Not last year and Labour did not Try a COVERUP as the Libs and Nats TRY to do AUTOMATICALLY

Jokes are jokes.

Is it a rape joke? I mean yes, it has the word 'Rape' in it but it's not a joke about someone being raped, it's a joke about someone who's so obsessed they see using a false claim of rape to get the person they want. Or maybe there were more jokes I'm not aware of.

The left always excuse sexism, bigotry, and homophobia when it's perpetuated by one of their own.

Short on ideas, short on truth, short on replies, should be short on the Lodge please

Typical, rape is not a joke and neither is Muslim bashing. Society has declined in so many ways, sad really 😞

Supposedly they were jokes with an apology. However politicians of all colours endorse Donald Trump despite his creepy perverted comments made about women. How picky are we going to get?

Wasn’t crooked Shorten accused of rape? No wonder he enjoys these tasteless types of references and jokes! Crooked Shorten is unfit to ever hold the high office of Prime Minister! He’s a weak and pathetic joke!!!

I'm so glad I'm not famous enough to answer for the stupid shit I said and did at 22. auspol

mistake

FromeneKa So Rape is okay? Disgusting

Meanwhile, you can write a character reference for a convicted paedo (after his guilt was determined), and be a Liberal Party asset. Funny old world.

It wouldn't be the first time that Shorten has made light of the whole issue of rape. I see this is still online, simply dismissed. But just because the police can't prove that it was technically rape it does not mean that the incident did not happen.

Well Shorten....the behaviour we walk by and ignore is the behaviour we accept. Duly noted in your case.

Gutless shorten.

C’mon guys it occurred in 2012, can you honestly say you don’t regret your ‘younger self’? So. so judgemental!
