Researchers call for action to reduce the risks of head impact and traumatic brain injury in all sports, as a new study finds former men's rugby internationals have more than double the risk of neurodegenerative disease, with players' risk of motor neurone disease 15 times that of the general population.

abc.net.au/news/study-finds-brain-disease-risk-more-double-former-rugby-players/101501052Researchers have called for strategies and action on head impact and traumatic brain injury across all sports after the release of a Scottish study showing elevated risk of various brain diseases for former rugby union internationals.

The study — published online in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, used 32 years' worth of public health data to track the health and survival of 412 former Scottish men's international rugby union players, matched for age, sex and socio-economic status with 1,236 members of the public.

However, the study found that the chance of being diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease was 11.5 per cent among former rugby players, compared to 5.5 per cent for the general public. And the former players studied were mostly amateurs, even though they had played the game to an elite, international level.
