As China and the United States play geopolitical tug-of-war on the global stage, it's feeling a little too close for comfort in one pocket of Australia.

Many readers have asked the ABC what might happen here if a conflict breaks out in the region.If it were an isolated event, the trade kerfuffle at a port in north-east China would be nothing to worry about. But in the context of recent global events, it's a ratcheting up of diplomatic tensions, writes business editor Ian Verrender.
