Early election results indicate the Liberal Party would struggle to gain ground in the eastern and southern suburbs of Melbourne where it needed to gain seats to challenge Labor for the government benches.
ABC election analyst Antony Green said Labor had swings against it in the western and northern suburbs, where its margins were already large, but not in the east. Liberal deputy leader David Southwick said the result in Caulfield would probably drag into next week because thousands of postal ballots had not yet been received.Opposition frontbencher Matt Bach said there were some positive signs indicating the Coalition would retain seats Kew and Brighton, where well-funded independents were running.
Bach said the electoral map was changing rapidly. “I’m concerned, of course, that things are changing right across our state,” he said. “Things are different at this election. Seats that are historically really safe for Labor … are no longer safe.”The Liberal Party won swings in early counting in the Mornington Peninsula seat of Nepean, which unexpectedly fell to Labor at the previous election.
