Caroline Bain finds work easier and more enjoyable if she has exercised in her lunch break.I overruled my guilt with the reminder that I was combating brain drain; that taking 30 minutes out of the day is ultimately a time-saver because exercise makes us more effective and efficient.

Exercise improves the sorts of cognitive functions we use at work like attention, working memory and problem solving, and it instantly improves our mood.As well as this, exercise can reduce internal stress while improving the way we handle external stress. Melody Ding, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney, conductedDing and her colleagues first measured the participants’ stress markers including blood pressure, cortisol levels, heart rate and heart rate variability. The participants then did 20 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise on a treadmill before driving in peak-hour traffic or they simply drove in peak-hour traffic without exercising first.
