: Former president Donald Trump has been dealt a blow after the hard-right ally he endorsed to become the new speaker of the US House Representatives was rejected in favour of his opponent.
And in an ominous sign of what might come, some of the people who voted for Jordan have already signalled they would support not Scalise, while Democrats have nominated their own leader, Hakeem Jeffries, to become the new Speaker.“I will not be voting for Steve Scalise on the floor this afternoon,” said Texas Congressman Chip Roy, adding that the party shouldn’t have brought on a vote so quickly.
Jordan is also the co-founder of the hard-right Freedom Caucus, does not support providing ongoing aid to Ukraine as it fights off a Russian invasion, and is one of the many Republicans who objected to the certification of Biden’s 202 election victory.“I will need a strong Speaker of the House who I can trust to help me when I return to the White House on January 20, 2025 as your next President,” Trump wrote in a fundraising email last week after endorsing him.
Another complicating factor was that some of McCarthy’s backers had been pushing for him to be reinstated. Among them was New York Republican Mike Lawler, who earlier this week tweeted that the limitations of Congress to assist Israel was “why you don’t remove a speaker mid-term without a cause. What an unmitigated sh_tshow.”
