Being aware of a little-known quirk associated with Easter eggs could help you avoid throwing out perfectly good chocolate and contributing to Australia's significant food waste problem.

Key points:A business owner focused on tackling food waste says the practice could lead to chocolate being discarded long before it's spoiled

"While some of our chocolate could potentially last for next Easter, these recommended best before dates ensure any unsold eggs and bunnies aren't offered to consumers the following season," a spokesperson said.Unlike other Cadbury products, Easter chocolates all expire on June 1.A spokesperson for Lindt & Sprüngli said it gave longer best before dates to its chocolates.

"Nevertheless, [the best before dates] are certainly longer than two months after Easter," they said. Melbourne business owner Grant Miles, who runs a food discount store, noticed Cadbury's Easter expiry dates a few years ago. Cadbury's Easter products are all best before, meaning they can be consumed after the date as long as the chocolate has not spoiled.

I've eaten discovered eggs when I couldn't even remember when it was Easter last

Hmm, how long do I think is okay..
