Tributes have flown after NSL champion and former Socceroos player Stephen Maxwell died aged 59. The Football SA Hall of Famer spent the majority of his career with Adelaide City and lifted the NSL trophy three times with the club. Following his retirement he remained in and around the sport as a coach at several levels. “It breaks our hearts to announce the passing of Stephen Maxwell, affectionately known as ‘Maxi’,” Sturt Lions said.

Maxwell was a key figure in one of the NSL’s biggest success stories when he was among several home-grown stars leading Adelaide City to glory. He was vice-captain to skipper Alex Tobin in 1992 when City won the NSL league and cup double. “He’ll be missed by the club and fans of the National Soccer League who will all remember him fondly as an extremely tough opponent,” Socceroos player turned broadcaster Craig Foster said.
