Opinion | Staying in Wuhan is riskier than 14 days on Christmas Island

Quarantine has been used throughout history, including in Europe during the black plague, because it works. As an island nation we have a unique advantage in that we do not have entry routes by road or rail. In fact, we have a long history of using quarantine to protect public health. We even have a longstanding Federal Quarantine Act and state public health acts for situations where the greater protection of society must be the highest priority.

An epidemic spreading here would cause stress on our health system. We would rapidly run out of isolation rooms and hospitals would face shortages of beds. Our health workers would be at risk of infection and even death, as was seen with SARS. Epidemic control is different to controlling chronic diseases, as, over days or weeks. You don’t have the luxury of time, and need to act very fast before it is too late.

Understandably, the thought of being quarantined in a detention centre is off-putting to Australian citizens. Their concerns include the lack of medical care on Christmas Island and, certainly, while Ausmat teams will be deployed to provide this care, it would be preferable that anyone who became ill was flown to Perth for care.

in US China evacuees are being put in quarantine in an old military base We always feed guests n even refugees well That is why they r determined to stay

Yeah, but it’s boring AF.

🦠🦠🛑⭕️⛔️🚫❌🇨🇳chinese ☠️👿👹👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻😡😡😡😡😡🤢🤢

If only there were disease control and quarantine centres in Australia, so they didn't have to fly these people thousands of kilometres out of their way, to a facility costing tens of millions to keep open for no apparent reason, apart from a Lib donor corporation is running it.

Obviously!

Its Duttons concentration camp to see a family of 4 all in one bed and ready to die at his hands

After this experience Xmas island could/should be officially recognised as the'quarantine station for human diseases' , like Mickleham for post entry animal and plant

Tough it up ...! why people are complaining about this, it is a logical thing to do, rather be on Christmas Island than you know...!

I wonder if ScottMorrisonMP, AngusTaylorMP or PeterDutton_MP own land on Christmas Island. Surely there is a way they can enrich themselves with tax dollars here.

Yep, let’s bring them to Sydney and self isolate. Will be interesting to hear the stories from them at my local shopping centre two days after there arrival. FYI these aren’t only Chinese.

This photo of a man lying dead in a Wuhan street shows the reality of the coronavirus outbreakA photo of an elderly man, wearing a face mask and carrying a plastic bag, lying dead in a Wuhan street as cyclists pedal past has shown what the conditions in the locked-down city are really like. Not a good advert for those face masks. People just cycle pass like it is a dead insect. That is Chinese culture, imagine if they conquer the world. There will be no emotion, care or selflessness. Dangerous Panda Bears. Thanks for your support! Are they still eating bats and tiger penises and dogs and cats? Where is this virus in Yulin when you need it? Fkwits

Medicos are preparing Christmas Island to be coronavirus quarantine zoneAustralia's disaster response medical team is turning Christmas Island detention centre into a coronavirus quarantine zone for when citizens arrive from China. Thanks our medical team. Must have been the best job in annexed Australia, 200 staff on Xmas Is with zero to do but snorkel, get drunk & harass a couple of teeny tots. But now the PM is loading up the place with coronavirus, I reckon there'll be queues for the next plane back. Australia is truly a great and well run country! Well done us!
