Trade and Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham wants Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia to “look at the evidence” of jurisdictions that have successfully and safely opened their borders.

“I want to see borders reopened in a safe way and I think we’ve now got models in place where jurisdictions are doing that,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News. “The Labor government in the Northern Territory, the Liberal government in South Australia – both of them taking positive steps in terms of opening up to New South Wales, that is warmly welcomed". Last week South Australia opened up to New South Wales following consistently low COVID-19 cases.

The Northern Territory will also open to the greater Sydney area from October 9, allowing the whole state to enter the top end. “I want to see the other states follow suit: Queensland, Tasmania, WA,” he said. “These are jurisdictions that need to continue to look at the evidence and make sure they follow that.
