State of emergency declared for Victoria: Premier

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has declared a state of emergency for four weeks to try to stem the spread of coronavirus.

This will give authorities powers under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act that have never been used before. The powers allow the Chief Health officer to do whatever is necessary to contain the spread of the virus and reduce the risk to the health of Victorians.Talks under underway with Victoria Police about how the orders will be enforced, the Premier said.School closures will be discussed at a meeting of chief health officers and the Chief Medical Officer in canberra today and tomorrow.Care packages will be available for vulnerable self-isolators, Mr Andrews said.
