Victoria’s high-flying former aviation minister Gordon Rich-Phillips repeatedly took to the skies during the pandemic lockdown, travelling more than 3000 kilometres while the rest of the state was ordered to stay home.

His trips included a series of scenic joy flights over Western Port Bay, the Port Phillip heads and the spectacular Otway ranges, with the long-serving state Liberal MP regularly taking off as the sun was setting over the Victorian coast. He said these flights were for legitimate work purposes, including a 700-kilometre round trip to the Warracknabeal aerodrome in the state’s north-west to assess the case for a requested upgrade of fuelling and other facilities, and a trip to inspect the condition of regional airports in Orbost, Bairnsdale and the fire-ravaged town of Mallacoota.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton announce easing of lockdown restrictions.Mr Rich-Phillips referred to a release issued by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Australia on May 11 declaring that, according to Premier Daniel Andrews’ office, private flying was “OK in Victoria’’.
