Despite a soaring public sector wage bill, Victoria’s public finances were improving before the latest lockdowns hit. noeltowell SpringSt covidvic covid19

But the new budget data covers the 12 months to June 30 and does not reflect the fresh blow to the economy and its impact on the budget from Melbourne’sbudgets across the nation, plunging all the states and territories, except Western Australia, and the Commonwealth deep into deficit and leaving them heavily indebted, with Victoria faring worse among the jurisdictions.

An unprecedented $15 billion was spent on state government capital works in 2021, which Treasurer Tim Pallas claimed on Friday was a key factor in keeping the economy functioning through the COVID-19 crisis. The red-hot housing market drove the government’s stamp duty take past $6.4 billion, $470 million higher than expected, and more than enough to offset most of the tax breaks in the pandemic stimulus and relief efforts, and leaving the state’s total tax take about $145 million higher than expected.in December and January, after Melbourne’s long lockdowns ended, drove taxes on losses on the machines up to $665 million, more than $77 million above expectations.

“The eye-watering deficit of $14.7 billion should concern all Victorians, and much of the large capital spend is being mismanaged with project cost blowouts now a sad norm under Labor,” the Liberal frontbencher said.

Voluntary assisted dying could be legal in NSW by the end of the yearNine years after watching her mum die a prolonged, painful and traumatic death, Shayne Higson watched as legislation that would have eased her suffering was tabled in NSW Parliament: Readers seeking support and information about suicide can contact Lifeline 24 hours a day online and on 13 11 14. Other services include the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467, Beyond Blue and Kids Helpline (for people aged five to 25) on 1800 55 1800. A civilised society is measured through how it gives people choice and dignity in death. The State and the Church should have no say in maintaining a system that forces clinicians to dial up the opioids as the only way out. IMHO this is wrong.
