A clear pattern is emerging from the Bell inquiry into Star Entertainment – that of a financially and culturally embattled company being managed by a chief executive desperately juggling too many problems.

It seems like the only thing saving The Star Sydney from losing its licence is the NSW government’s desire to save the jobs of the thousands of staff it employs.

The now-former chief executive Robbie Cook was so busy dealing with a huge bushfire threatening the company’s solvency that tending to cultural spot fires was relegated further down the priorities list. This makes it difficult to imagine that the current board can now work co-operatively on what must be a mutually desirable outcome of suitability.
