Researchers working with traditional owners have managed to preserve a rock art site in WA's Pilbara region in the same area as a similar site which was destroyed.

Researchers have identified the significance of Indigenous rock art on the site of a proposed mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, preventing it from being destroyed in the same way a similar nearby site was this year.

Researchers and traditional owners have saved the"spine-tingling" site from destruction by Rio Tinto. The company drew criticism in May when it blew up a 46,000-year-old rock art site of cultural importance to the neighbouring Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people in Juukan Gorge in the same mountain range.

Dr Huntley said she had been left frustrated by similar situations in the past, and was surprised Rio Tinto eventually agreed to preserve the site. “Not just Rio [Tinto] but all of the mining companies up there in the Pilbara are taking things much more seriously and treating things differently than they did previously,” she said.

'I was ashamed of myself': V'landys left shaken after meeting with NRL's Indigenous leadersMonths before sports around the world embraced the Black Lives Matter movement, Indigenous leaders in the NRL sat down with league bosses for a meeting that left Peter V'landys 'ashamed and disappointed'. *yawns* To select teams based on race is racist. We used to criticise South Africa during apartheid. Now I think only Australia and New Zealand select racially-based teams (aboriginal/maori). Hypocrisy.
