Spender sides with Labor over Coalition on raiding super for housing | michaelkoziol

A policy divide over housing has opened up in the key battleground seat of Wentworth in the final days of the election campaign, with independent candidate Allegra Spender rejecting the government’s bid to unlock superannuation for house deposits.

Spender was more favourable towards the Coalition’s proposal to encourage downsizing by allowing people as young as 55 to make a $300,000 tax-free superannuation contribution when they sell their family home. But it still failed to tackle the supply problem seriously, she said. In a comment seemingly directed at Spender’s family wealth, Sharma added: “My opponent might not have any personal experience of this scenario, but I can assure you that many locals in their 20s and 30s have warmly welcomed this boost to their homeownership aspirations.”

Spender opposed changes to negative gearing, arguing it was “not one of the main drivers” behind housing costs compared with stamp duty, which she wants to review. She said the solution was to increase housing supply and build the right type of homes, but she added the caveat that construction should occur primarily in seats less dense than Wentworth.

michaelkoziol Surprise surprise.. the true colours and political alliance of the so called teal independents finally is starting to come through now that they sense their masters are going to win. Dodgy politics of dodgy and greedy politicians.

michaelkoziol Because she already has multiple houses

michaelkoziol Battle of the Eastern Suburbs, jolly good 🫶

michaelkoziol She is not siding. She is thinking independently. That is what independents do

michaelkoziol Pity the amateur who has not done deep research on this issue and blindly side with Labor. Proves conclusively to discerning voters where her preferences will go. Such a deceitful independent !

michaelkoziol Another good reason to vote for her!

michaelkoziol Allegra…try to be somewhat statesmanlike …don’t decry a good idea merely because you or Labor didn’t think of it….

michaelkoziol Now which Liberal pollie would claim this to be true? Oh it is only Dave..... Take no notice of him, he is harmless

michaelkoziol *and experts

michaelkoziol Who wouldn’t!?

michaelkoziol Is the coalition really a conservative party I always thought being conservative was about risk mitigation . The liberal party policy does nothing to address the spiralling income to property price issue.

michaelkoziol Who’s Dave ‘siding with’? 😉😉😉

michaelkoziol Just like Labor, Spender wants the Unions to control and spend your money.

michaelkoziol There you have it Spender was always Labour. Voters beware the fake teal.

michaelkoziol Sharma is a goner. Deadman walking.

michaelkoziol Looking forward to the headline 'Spender backs price cuts'.

Coalition super housing policy likely to inflate prices by increasing demand, analysts saySaul Eslake points to ‘unambiguous and unequivocal evidence’ showing such policies lift prices rather than home ownership So did the Guardian run a story like this for Labor's much more generous scheme Love this quote today. Not sure, but think the proportion of first-home buyers in the first home buyers market is actually quite large. And giving them access to more money just inflates prices, actually gifting the money to current owners of first home buyer properties auspol

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg swears ‘hand on heart’ super for housing policy won’t drive prices upOn Monday, Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the policy was an 11th hour idea from the Coalition government, and first home buyers were realising it would have a “diabolical” effect on their superannuation balances. auspol ausvotes You cannot take all properties transactions. New homebuyers will be at the bottom end. Sure the higher end properties will not be effected so much but the bottom end will. The headline for this story is incorrect/misleading, and I recommend you fix it ASAP. His quote is “I can say hand on heart that we don’t expect this to have a material impact on house prices'. He's not swearing it won't drive prices up; he's swearing it's a sincerely held belief He is likely right as interest rates rising will cap price growth

'Like adding kerosene to a fire': Labor attacks Scott Morrison's super home deposit planLabor housing spokesperson Jason Clare said the policy would drive up prices and hurt young Australians, after the former prime minister and super architect Paul Keating called it a 'full-frontal assault' on the system. A financial whiz-kid I definitely am not..on the contrary, I'm a math-dickhead..but I know enough to know that if innocent dickheads syphon their super & flood the market with MILLIONS of bucks in available cash, it will be a feeding-frenzy for the sharks..Please..dump Morrison.. $50k will be totally absorbed in higher house prices, and people will lose $360,000 of super over a 25 year period based on historical returns. A disgraceful dud policy Liberal have been hell bent on destroying Super for years. Why do you think they allowed ppl access their Super in 2020? It wasn't out of the 'goodness' of their hearts🙄. Jason Clare is 100% right here. But don't take my word for it, just ask the experts who say the same thing.

Coalition plan to allow first homebuyers to access super ‘will jack up house prices’Allowing access to up to $50,000 of retirement savings ‘like throwing petrol on a bonfire’, industry super group warns Why not scrap negative gearing instead? I would think having to put 'some' is the capital gain into super on selling later will be a disincentive to sell too - then they'll all get criticised for hogging housing stock with extra bedrooms they don't need. (Assuming they can buy 1 bed place firstly).
