A scientific expedition has captured a view of a rare sea creature for the first time in the Pacific Ocean.Nautilus expedition posted a video of the never-before-seen encounter, about 3km below the ocean's surface on the Johnston Atoll, a US unincorporated territory west of Hawaii.
Researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in the US caught the unusual sight on camera almost 1.4km below the ocean's surface off the coast of California.Most squids reproduce by depositing egg cases on the seafloor or releasing eggs in a gelatinous mass that drifts in open water., MBARI said scientists think these nurturing mothers will instead carry the eggs until they hatch to improve their babies' chances for survival.
Scientists have discovered a new rare species of deep-sea crown jellyfish in Monterey Bay, off the US state of California. Scientists with Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute sometimes see strawberry squids - or Histioteuthis heteropsis - during their expeditions.
