Space oddity: the clock is ticking for the last video stores

It happens almost every day that Ben Kenny is open for business. Someone walks in, wide-eyed and open mouthed, and says, “I didn’t think these places existed any more.” The 40-year-old owns, a video store – or more accurately, a DVD rental store – in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. “When I opened in 2011, I was a rarity,” he says. “Now, I’m an oddity.”Steven Siewert

The asteroids that wiped out this dinosaur are easy to pinpoint. Widespread illegal downloading hit the industry hard, then both Netflix and Stan opened for business here in 2015, offering on-demand streaming.
