‘Someone will die’: Aussie swimming legend slams doping-enhanced Games plan

Australian swimming legend Kieren Perkins has a blunt message for organisers of the proposed Enhanced Games: “Someone will die.”

Magnussen is set to compete for a mooted US$1 million prize for anyone that can break an existing world record. “Someone will die if we allow that sort of environment to continue to foster and flourish,” he told the conference. US president Joe Biden, former Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates and International Athletics president Sebastian Coe are also among those to have voiced grave concerns over the concept.

“Giving people the opportunity to be informed and understand what the risk is that they’re taking is a starting point, but it isn’t something that we should walk away from and say ‘if they want to go kill themselves, knock themselves out’.“I don’t think civil society has been comfortable with that context for a long time.”

Speaking on the Hello Sport podcast last month, Magnussen was asked about the concept of the steroid games and which athletes should be considered
