Chinese officials have told other Pacific island nations that Australia is interfering in their affairs.

China has called suggestions it will build a military base on the Solomon Islands “fake news” and says Scott Morrison has no grounds to declare a “red line” on a security deal signed between two sovereign countries.

“What right do these countries have to tell China what to do? What right does Australia have to draw a ‘red line’ between the Solomon Islands, which is 2000 kilometres away from it, and China, which is 5000 kilometres away? If this is not violation of other countries’ sovereignty, interference in other countries’ internal affairs and violation of international rules, what is,”Officials from the Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, Micronesia, Kiribati, Fiji and Vanuatu attended the...

“I realise that Australia is a sovereign country and it can enter into any treaty it wants to, transparently or not, which is exactly what they did with the AUKUS treaty.” Mr Sogavare was responding to criticism by Australia that it was not consulted about the security pact with China. “Recently, Australian officials and the media have repeatedly hyped up the China-Solomons security cooperation agreement, deliberately distorting the facts and creating tension, which is extremely irresponsible. China firmly opposes this,” he said.

“We should have given more support to the Solomon Islands. If only we had helped them instead of allowing this pact with China to go ahead,” Shukichi Hokama, the mayor of the remote Japanese island of Yonaguni which is concerned it could be caught up in a conflict with China over Taiwan, toldThe United States has also issued a warning over the pact following a meeting last week between US officials and Mr Sogavare, who repeated assurances that the agreement would not lead to a military base.

Solomons prime minister hits out at Australian government over AUKUS deal‘When Australia signed up to AUKUS, we did not become theatrical or hysterical about the implications this would have for us,’ said prime minister Manasseh Sogavare.
