The French embassy in Australia is calling on the “solidarity and generosity” of French expatriates living in Melbourne to billet French people stranded in the city by the conflict in New Caledonia.

On Sunday, Martin Juillard, Consul General of France in Sydney, said that hundreds of French people who live in New Caledonia had been unable to leave Melbourne because of the closure of Nouméa airport.

“I thank you in advance for your solidarity and generosity. The French community of Victoria has never been left out in this regard, and I know that its support will not be missed by our compatriots in difficulty during this exceptional period.” An eventual reopening of the Nouméa-La Tontouta airport to commercial flights could allow stranded tourists to escape the island where armed clashes, arson, looting and other mayhem have prompted France to impose a state of emergency. The airport, with routes to Australia, Singapore, New Zealand and other destinations, closed on Tuesday as protests against voting reforms opposed by pro-independence supporters degenerated into widespread violence, leaving a vast trail of destruction.

The police effort to reopen the airport road cleared nearly 60 barricades on its first day, French authorities in New Caledonia’ posted on X. The foreign ministers of Australia and New Zealand said they are seeking French green lights to fly out their nationals.
