Lauren Jackson had her best game of the tournament as the Australian Opals sealed their place in the medal rounds with a win over Belgium on Thursday night.

“Bec is still an important part of this team but if she can’t go, I’m not going to try and force the action,” Opals coach Sandy Brondello said. The win caps off an emotional turnaround for Australia who lost their first game to France and looked destined to end their home world cup disappointed but instead they rallied and have now won five-straight games.

Belgium made it clear from the outset they were going to fire away from three and it worked early as they took 6-2 lead but gradually the Opals turned the defensive screws and attacked the basket with 12 of their first 17 points scored close to the basket. USA plays Canada in a semi-final on Friday at 5pm AEST followed by Australia against China at 7.30pm AEST with both games live on ESPN.Team USA rolled towards an 11th FIBA Women’s World Cup title on Thursday but they may be without influential wing Kahleah Copper for the medal rounds.

“Defensively she’s hard to play against and she had a near triple double and I think if we made a few more of those open shots, she has a triple double pretty easily.
