It has been a while since my last Postcard from Tokyo. Forgive me for being such a lazy correspondent.
I am not saying it hasn’t had its rewards and I know at the end of all this I will have a lovely home, but I completely underestimated how bamboozled I might feel, how little specialist language I could understand, how out of depth I have felt at times and just how many Toto toilets there are to choose from.I had always known I wanted a place where I could escape Japanese summers and had been looking for land on and off for the last five years.
Japanese interest rates are pretty low, and the added incentives for those who build homes in a “sustainable” fashion is keeping my accountant happy. The government underwrites this scheme and keeps a lid on rates rises, so fingers crossed, this all goes to plan.
