The Herald's View: Owners are concerned about discriminating against their unvaccinated customers, but they will be the big winners if we open up safely

The balance between individual freedoms and the interests of the wider community has repeatedly been tested during the COVID-19 pandemic and the front line is shifting to the small business community.

But there are increasing complaints from store owners online about what they say is an infringement of their civil liberties, which turns them into enforcers of public health orders. One store proclaims: “My store and my staff will not take part in discriminating against people for any reason.” It is, of course, a serious matter to impose these restrictions on businesses and individuals and in a perfect world, people would get vaccinated voluntarily because it would save their lives and keep them out of hospital.

All those saying they won't go to a business unless it is for vaccinated only, don't forget the unvaccinated can go to any essential service business, that's every supermarket, pharmacy, doctors, shopping centre, petrol station etc, it seems the vaccinated will be limited as well

Brainwashed fear mongering. Look for evidence you will find out what is being hidden

As a business owner I have a legislated responsibility to provide a safe workplace for my employees. And a duty of care towards my customers. I'm not going to have any issue whatsoever with treating anti-vaxxers the way they should be treated.

They will be winners by denying customers? Excellent logic!

This is gonna get messy real quick when refusing service to ... let’s say as an example, an unvaxxed Indigenous person.

Post lockdown, I hope to be able to avoid any business that serves the unvaxxed, just like I would actively support a business that only served the vaxxed. Only because I want to feel safe.

One store proclaims: “My store and my staff will not take part in discriminating against people for any reason.” So this store prefers to increase the chance of their staff & customers to get sick and be a super spreader source? I hope business owner have better plan than that..

I will absolutely be trading with un/vaxxed people, after all the draconian lockdowns, I have no choice but to trade with anyone and everyone. Many business owners will be the same.

Like many, I have already had Covid + a vaccine is thus useless + also a risk because of my health condition, simply for the state to absolve itself from its own failures... this is an insane agenda to turn people against each other, so that the state can rule at any cost...

Vaccinate the vulnerable including anyone outside the healthy weight range. Everyone else will survive covid. COVID

I’d feel better about a business that wants only vaccinated customers because it gives me an indication that they take COVID safe policies seriously.

I'd like to assume that everyone in the hairdresser has been vaxxed when I go in. I dont care about offending the non vaxxed, I don't want to increase my change of getting covid and passing it onto my kids because I wanted to get my colour done.

They can either support it or go out of business. Simple

Vic govt could mandate all its employees to be vaccinated instead of once again abdicating their responsibilities to small businesses DanielAndrewsMP VicGovDH make some tough decisions that are good for business

Their first duty is to protect their staff. They don’t need to pander to the stupid and paranoid.

get vaccinated why? So you’re protected. From what? The unvaccinated. If it protects, then why worry? Shows this is not about caring for people’s health and saving lives. These psychopaths dont give a shit about you or your family

Only a fool will buy into this. Fools who got the jab.

Yes, I would 'discriminate' against an unvaccinated employee BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO DIE

‘Fresh air is the safest place to be’: Hazzard raises easing more outdoor restrictionsThe NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard says he would support the government potentially easing more restrictions for outdoor settings even before the state reaches the 70 per cent full vaccination target. Would you sit 1.5 meters from someone on the beach not wearing a mask if you knew they had CV19? Would you tell others that was ok for them? If “fresh air is the best place to be” why are we still wearing masks out of doors? It never made any sense. COVID is a virus that only thrives in enclosed spaces If BradHazzard meant that, then why are people in LGAs of concern locked up?
