A Hunter Valley slaughterhouse worker who knifed a colleague to death has been found guilty of manslaughter.Jamie Cust's defence team successfully argued that he was under "extreme provocation" when he killed Jesus BebitaCust will be sentenced in OctoberCust said Mr Bebita sexually assaulted him while he was sleeping and argued he was under "extreme provocation".

After the verdict was delivered Judge Wilson turned to the jury and acknowledged the gruesome nature of the case.Defence barrister Paul Rosser QC said he would seek a psychiatric assessment for his client.Crown prosecutor Brendan Queenan told the court the men were mates and that Cust had acted in a way that a friend would not be expected to act."You might think an appropriate response is, 'I am not interested, get off me', or there might be outrage and yelling.

"These men were mates, you can see in their phone and text conversation — there is bloke talk … talk about jobs and talk about drinking." "The Crown says that should have made it less likely that the accused would react badly to what he found Mr Bebita doing to him."You might think for a friend to do that is an act of betrayal and trust and that the insult of it being done by a friend makes it all the worse."We'll deliver a wrap of the week's best local stories and photos to you every Thursday.

I had a friend who assaulted a male because the man repeatedly racially abused him. He was found guilty and the judge said verbal provocation is not a defence to assault someone. Strange how it is a defence when you are alleged to have murdered someone. 🤔

Not sure if I would call them 'mates'.

Only makes sense if the victim survived

So 49 stab wounds were accidental
