It mightn't look like much, but this patch of scrubland is described as the 'most incredible treasure chest in the world' as it is home to the oldest known mineral grains on Earth.

This patch of scrubland in Western Australia's remote outback has been added to the National Heritage List. Its significance?It is home to the world's largest repository of zircon crystals which date back 4.4 billion yearsErawondoo Hill, 800 kilometres north of Perth, is home to the oldest known mineral grains on Earth, zircon crystals, which date back an astonishing 4.4 billion years making them just 120 millions years younger than Earth itself.

"It's moved people to such flights of fancy and thinking about our history, where we came from, what our planet went through to become a habitable environment where we could live. "This site has enormous scientific, educational and cultural value which deserves to be recognised and preserved."
