An already restrictive media environment in Singapore is further threatened by a controversial new bill, rights groups say.

and disinformation, providing broad powers for authorities to police speech online, including in encrypted messaging applications.

David Kaye, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of expression, wrote to the Singaporean Government in late April to raise concerns that the law would"serve as a basis to deter fully legitimate speech, especially public debate, criticism of government policy, and political dissent".A commanding majority of members of Singaporean Parliament voted for the bill, which passed 72-9 on May 8.

The opposition Workers' Party claimed the Government had a"hidden agenda" to clamp down on ordinary citizens. The law requires platforms like Google, Facebook and Twitter — which have their Asian headquarters in Singapore — to remove posts deemed to contain falsehoods by authorities.

Wouldn’t be required if MSM reported news without bias, instead of peddling agendas and telling the masses ‘what to think’.

We need it here.

Promulgation of false stories as truth is the equivalent of yelling ”fire” in a crowded theater. Given the current epidemic of “alternative facts,” extreme measures seem warranted if freedom is to survive. Freedom to lie and present it as fact is not worth protecting.

Spotlight on fake Indigenous Australian art amid new calls for a clampdownLaws to stamp out the trade of phony Aboriginal art manufactured in China are no closer to fruition, with neither major party fully committing to tougher legislation if it wins government on May 18. It isn't Art, it is design and so long as there is no attempt at deception regarding the origins of the object then there is nothing wrong with it, except for the tackiness of it. Idiots buy rubbish and want the lowest price. Any ideas that apply racism in legislation would fail. Still it's a good joke when the idiot tourist notices 'made in China' bwhahahahaha Are the fabrics and tea towels hand painted? I doubt it.
