One-third of road space in Sydney's CBD was provided to pedestrians yet they make up 92 per cent of trips to the city.A council spokeswoman said road space within the CBD needed to be reallocated to pedestrians, as it was not possible for the city to continue to grow with current levels of car use. It is also seeking more ‘scramble’ intersections that allow people to cross diagonally and technology that registers pedestrians and automatically triggers traffic lights.to tackle overcrowded footpaths, including fewer parking spaces, fewer cars, more bike lanes, wider footpaths and possibly a congestion charge.

She said there had been a 12 per cent reduction in vehicles coming into the city in the morning peak, and a steep fall in pedestrian deaths and injuries from 288 between 2009 and 2013 to 182 in the five years to 2018.
