A mental health emergency among Australian children is being inadequately addressed, leaving many with the likelihood of long-term harm to their education and employment.
She warned if steps are not taken to bolster mental health services and access for primary school-aged, and younger, children experiencing symptoms including anxiety, depression and eating issues triggered by stress on their families “it will become a trans-generational disaster”.
“Growing numbers are coming to emergency departments in part because they haven’t been able to get into other services or known where to go. When every other presentation at emergency departments went down during COVID, mental health presentations for children went up.” “Child wellbeing hubs would mean rather than having to go to a GP and find their way [to specialist treatment for various aspects of the child’s condition] this provides a one-stop shop with multidisciplinary assessment of a child who may for example be having learning or social skills difficulties, and anxiety issues,” said Dr Burgess.
She said there was an urgent need for specialist mental health services in emergency departments and the development of child wellbeing hubs to bring differing child health and mental health practitioners together.“We need to be really holistic about this and to include social care in there. Often mental health problems are exacerbated by family and social circumstances, we saw increased family violence, housing insecurity, financial and legal problems during COVID,” she said.
Funding for the placement of provisional psychologists and psychology interns who can enhance the capability of school services at low cost.

How many of these kids use social media? How many of their parents use it? Unrealistic expectations. Sometimes I think it's the worst thing invented and what it's doing to society.
Parents have an obligation, as parents, to protect children from the 'adult world' and access to it through social media etc

What we've done with mental health issues, is we've made them fashionable. Now everybody wants to be DEPRESSED because of the attention depression gets them. Or ADD or whatever. To rid people of their maladies , we have to make them painful for them again
And the cause is (drum role)? There is money to be made in promoting misery. Or it could be 'all care taken but no responsibility taken' parenting. But what do I know. I am on a pill for it.
I am not surprised at all. You sneeze in front of a child and they are taught that the sneeze may kill them. A child expresses a view about a wanting to play with a “boy” or “girl” toy and they are taught that they should ponder over what gender they are.
IMHO children need to be back at school. Routine.
