'She was trapped': Wheelchair-using woman killed in Sydney housefire

Emergency services were called to a duplex apartment at Hammers Road, Northmead, about 9.30am today.

The fire broke out at the back of the home, causing the roof to cave in and sending smoke high into the air.Fire and Rescue NSW managed to extinguish the blaze that has spread throughout the home. "More than 30 firefighters, in specialised breathing apparatus, battled the flames while setting up protection hoses to ensure a neighbouring property remained safe," Fire and Rescue NSW said.Neighbours were today shocked to learn their friend had perished in the fire.

"I came outside and I seen smoke and everything and I was starting to wonder where it come from and when I found out it came from Julie's house, who I've known for 27 years since I lived here," John Young, a neighbour, said."She's in a disability wheelchair and she had no way of sort of getting out at all."Police have established a crime scene and are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
