As Melbourne woman Rubina Nawabi watched the video of Al Noor mosque last Friday, not only did she know every doorway, every room, every possible hiding place - she also knew the faces of those falling before her eyes.
Ms Ahmed had helped women and children escape the gunfire, but was shot when she returned to the mosque to find her husband, who is in a wheelchair.Ms Nawabi, originally from Pakistan, lived in Christchurch for 19 years before moving to Melbourne. Al Noor had been her haven. She called“Watching the video was so personal ... I could see this corridor on the right, this was the kitchen, there was the women’s room, there was the sliding door.
Haji-Daoud Nabi, the 71-year-old man who died as the gunman entered the mosque, was one of the Nawabi family’s first friends in New Zealand. They were planning to stay with him on their next trip.Ms Nawabi didn’t want to watch the video, but she needed to know if her sister and brother-in-law, who live two streets away and attend Al Noor every Friday, were okay.
She says she is trying hard, however, not to let the attack in her former home city make her fearful in her new one, where she works as a well-being officer for new immigrants.
