An Indigenous woman who went to a Perth police station for help after being bashed, robbed and left with a broken rib on the weekend was instead arrested for unpaid fines and sent to jail.Police claim the assault was not raised when she went to the stationNoongar woman Keennan Dickie said after being assaulted and robbed on Saturday night, she walked to a nearby fast food restaurant to seek help because her phone and money had been stolen.
Police officers who attended noted Ms Dickie's injuries and told her that she had outstanding fines and would need to attend a police station to settle them and to report her assault after she had recovered.Ms Dickie said she went to Mirrabooka Police Station to report the assault the following day, but was taken into custody before she had a chance to do so.
"I asked to make a report about an assault from the previous night and while I was waiting, a police officer came out and informed me that I was under arrest," she said.'I was absolutely terrified'"In the back of a [police van] there is nowhere to really buckle yourself in, so I felt every bump and every turn," she said."I was absolutely terrified because I had never even been in the back of a police car before.
She was spoken to by police on the night, didn’t want to make an assault complaint. Was put into an ambulance and told to get her injuries attended to and attend a station at a later date if she wanted to make a complaint and to sort out her fines.
Here is a crazy idea for those who don’t take responsibility for their actions.
JusticeMatter10 Not true. Police attended on the night and advised her to get treatment in hospital and sort the fines out later. She attended a station a few days later in relation to the fines an didn’t mention the assault matter. Factual reporting would help.
Since we can never know if the police were racist, I propose that we stop all police action against POCs until the greens and labour finally get rid of racism in a few years.
Humane and compassionate... not!!
Police need to me a bit more helpful when dealing with people who are borderline mentally disabled to ensure that their rights are protected and that they fully understand their obligations.
i spent the weekend in lock up after reporting a car accident that wasn't my fault i was in, unpaid parking fines, stood up in front of the judge in handcuffs 4 days later ended up being my fault because i didn't react quick enough cost me a lot $again
