They hail from vastly different parts of the world, drawn to Australia by love, career opportunities and, in the midst of a deadly pandemic, safety and security | smh_andrew

They hail from vastly different parts of the world, drawn to Australia by love, career opportunities and, in the midst of a deadly pandemic, safety and security.

Ms Horma was born in Morocco and studied, lived and worked in France, the United States, United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates before her first visit to Australia.“I immediately fell in love with Sydney when I visited the first time, and loved the country even more as I travelled around and made another family here,” she said.

Cr Moore said she had made more than 25,000 people Australian citizens during her tenure, calling it “one of my favourite responsibilities”. “I get to celebrate the incredible diversity of our new Sydneysiders while acknowledging the shared values and freedoms that unite us all,” she said. Gabriele Tedesco will also become an Australian citizen at the Opera House on January 26 just a few months before he becomes a father.

Abhijeet Gandhi and his wife Duhita arrived in Sydney in 2015 after stints in the United States and Singapore. Mr Gandhi said there were many aspects of life in his adopted country that were not given a second thought by Australians.

_andrew Thank goodness for a positive story about Australia Day not the endless self hatred from journos and self appointed activists. Actually 90% of Australians feel the same way about our country as these new citizens. We love it.

_andrew My partner would love to be given the opportunity to contribute to our great country & has paid $7715 so far for the privilege. Unfortunately ausgov doesn't recognize him as my family so we are partnersapart & AlexHawkeMP keeps us waiting in a broken system partnervisas

_andrew So many passports of the world are seen as useless pieces of paper. So many countries with nothing, no security, no sense of pride, distant inaccessible governments that are democratic in name only, or not at all. It’s security and protection that attracts most.

_andrew Many of Australia's new citizens are *dual* citizens, which dilutes their allegiance to this country. Dual citizenship is a rising national risk at a time when totalitarian regimes (even ostensibly democratic ones) are treating their diaspora as extensions of the 'home' regime

_andrew Too many here now.

_andrew People with PR do citizenship ASAP, they don't trust the government, they keep changing the rules & tests. John Howards, 2001, racist 444 Visa to prevent Kiwi Asians & Pacific Islanders becoming Aussies is still in place. Kiwis pay $7+billion to the ATO, its not about money

_andrew ⛔️ Australia Day 2021 spare a thought for the over 39,000 strandedAussies Read: removethecaps Still restrictions on arrivals. Perilous now critical-having lost jobs or visas to live elsewhere. Even with self paid hotel quarantine on arrival. Australia must fix this! 🇦🇺🌏🙏

_andrew

_andrew Will they celebrate Australia Day and everything our country is giving them?

_andrew Because of love, of course. 😎
