What went wrong in Alice Springs? Labor MP for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour has lived and worked across the Territory all her life. She says the spike in crime and violence may be due to a major oversight. More on the Howard-era 'Intervention' policy here:

Supplied

"During these fifteen years, we have seen the demonising of Aboriginal people and culture and the erosion of self-determination.”While most Intervention laws ended on Sunday, Commonwealth legislation enabling compulsory income management continues. The Northern Territory government said any person or entity that wishes to sell alcohol in a remote community must apply to the Northern Territory Liquor Commission for a licence.

At the time the government said it was responding to violence and the alleged sexual assault of children.

PresentMurray Tell me this has nothing to do with grog....

The AlboMP Government and the Teal Independant's were warned what would happen and they decided that their agenda was more important, leave this here-

Utter rubbish. Indig ppl need to be responsible for their own bad behaviours, bad attitudes, bad parenting and toxic personal habits.

scrimgour should toss in her labor card and go independent.

Always someone else's fault, take responsibility for your community and if tough love is needed then so be it but stop making excuses for their behavior.

Yes the government let’s it get out of control but if anything was done before it did it would’ve been deemed as racist.

So.. it's the Govt's fault that Aboriginals are drinking, abandoning their children, and committing crimes? Anyone see a problem with that logic?

So she knows nothing and now blames the govt

How about some individual responsibility to be a law-abiding citizen?

Marion clearly can't see past her party politics...this is not news..it's party based propoganda. Will we ever have politicians that represent and look forward...stop justifying poor behaviour and deflecting, by pointing at others.

Opt in opt out, it is free. Stop playing politics and yes, it is a race issue.

My nurse mate not long ago returned from a placement there, and based on her reports its not just race based issues. Lack of support, funding and feet down in those Communities were issues that caused a perpetual cycle. I agreed to help her raise those issues internally

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. If you can't get the horrific rate of child sexual abuse under control within your own community, then other people will do it for you. When that happens, you're no position to complain. Take responsibility and stop blaming others.

What... is this a joke? Albo is currently in Alice because of the massive spike in crime, that came about at the end of intervention measures. Such as alcohol bans.

NT will not have ‘race-based policy’ that ‘disempowers’ Aboriginal Territorians: FylesNorthern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles says the territory will not have a 'race-based policy' that 'disempowers' Aboriginal Territorians, as the government faces pressure to tackle the issue of alcohol and rising crime rates in the region. “People out of the Northern Territory need to understand the context,” she told Sky News Australia. “We have some of the most strictest alcohol supply measures, we will continue to work in that space, but we will not have a race-based policy that disempowers Aboriginal Territorians.” Self determination and self governance has worked so well in the past. Corruption, nepotism, theft and mismanagement. We should give the indigenous people a voice to parliament we can run the country like ATSIC was. This situation presents a potential matter for a ‘Voice’ to address. So give it a go ‘Voice’ protagonists! CRIME BASE POLICY!!!!

Calls for an immediate return of alcohol bans in the NT amid a rise in crimeThere are calls for an immediate return of alcohol bans in the Northern Territory’s Indigenous communities and town camps after a dramatic rise in crime and domestic violence in Alice Springs. It has been just over six months since the Stronger Futures laws lapsed, meaning alcohol was suddenly legal for the first time in many Aboriginal town camps in 15 years. The Northern Territory government has yet to budge on the issue. Chief Minister Natasha Fyles will be in Alice Springs on Tuesday, where she’s expected to make an announcement around alcohol, but it’s yet to be seen whether she’ll announce the bans will be reinstated. The outcome of the lifting of the bans was obvious to everyone other than the Aboriginal grievance industry and the Labor, Greens and Teals coalition. Yeh look how Alcohol made Chris Smith behave. A pity someone didn't listen to the voices that warned them this would happen.
