Sydney and much of the state's coast have been drenched by torrential rain on Friday, as an intense trough delivered a reprieve from months of heat and catastrophic bushfire conditions.
The city's drenching began in earnest about 10pm on Thursday, and by 7am on Friday 54.2 millimetres of rain had already been recorded at Sydney's Observatory Hill.The coastal trough, which at about 6am was near the northern NSW coast, is expected to deepen and gradually shift southwards, increasing rainfall along the central and southern parts of the coast and adjacent ranges during Friday and over the weekend.
The bureau has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall for the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Metropolitan and parts of the Hunter, Illawarra, Central Tablelands and Northern Tablelands forecast districts.
