Social media users have recalled the 'insane' thunderstorm which hit parts of NSW overnight, as Sky News Meteorologist Alison Osborne revealed the weather forecast for Australia Day.

NSW SES first issued a warning on Tuesday afternoon to advise a storm was set to hit parts of Greater Wollongong, Sydney, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology continued to issue updates throughout the night, with the Sydney Metro, Illawarra and Western Sydney area deemed at most risk. "The #SydeyMetro and #Illawarra, along with the northeast, are at risk currently. Other locations may potentially be affected a bit later as the situation evolves," the Bureau wrote.

The lightening then quickly moved through the suburbs of Campbelltown, Southern Highlands and other parts of Greater Sydney. Residents posted photos online of large golf-ball sized hale that had slammed into their home. Residents took to social media to show the large hail that had fallen onto their property from Tuesday night's intense storm. Picture: Facebook
