Ivan Milat is just one of a handful of serial killers that Crime-writer, Amanda Howard has maintained an enduring relationship with, spanning many years. 9News

"I thought, 'why am I reading something thirdhand I can actually go and talk to these people firsthand?'"

For 20 years she wrote to Bobby Joe Long, an American serial killer and rapist who murdered at least 10 women in Florida. But that ended, along with Long's life, when he was executed in May this year. "I started writing to killers around the world so I could get their side of the story and to get inside their minds," Howard said. The most disturbing letter Howard ever got was from Arthur Shawcross, also known as the Genesee River Killer."He sent me a recipe where I was one of the key ingredients," Howard said.Howard has turned down two marriage proposals from imprisoned American serial killers.

"I find they are all starved for attention. If I don't reply fast enough they write back saying, 'Are you still there? Are you coming back soon?'"All the letters are on display, along with other macabre curiosities, such as a head set from a decommissioned US electric chair, a personal cheque signed by Charles Manson and original reporter notebooks from the John F. Kennedy assassination.

The laws preventing victims from being able to speak about their suffering are wrong. This situation is unjust. Psychiatrists have never cured anyone of violent psychopathy therefore such criminals should never leave prison as they will not change and cannot be changed, they are permanently broken in a way that makes them completely incompatible with civil society.
