It was just a couple of lines in a prime ministerial speech but it gives telling insight into how Scott Morrison sees himself, the country and the world. “We have been a favoured isle, with many natural advantages for many decades,” he said on Wednesday. “But we have not seen the conflation of global economic and strategic uncertainty now being experienced here in Australia, in our region, since the existential threat we faced when the global and regional order collapsed in the 1930s and 1940s.
Morrison has gone through the most extraordinary transformation. He was pretty much unknown to the Australian public when he came from nowhere to seem to sneak into office, darting opportunistically through a Peter Dutton challenge to Malcolm Turnbull to outwit both and catch the falling prize of the prime ministership as it tumbled from Turnbull’s hands.
“The lesson I have learned from those who have been in this job,” Morrison tells me, “is they rarely made the same mistake twice”. He ducked one national crisis and he’s determined not to do so again. So what’s he doing about it? The government “is working to ensure strategic balance is achieved, so peace and stability can return”. Balancing against what, exactly? “Potential adversaries” is the answer. Morrison is, of course, too diplomatic to say so, but this is code for China.
shouldn’t have taken a stand in the first place. we are not a dog of the US !
Lol.....
I'm betting Morrison wouldn't know the meaning of 'conflation', but his speech writer would.
He’s doing incredibly well and I believe Australians back his stance
Morrison continued: “That period of the 1930s has been something I have been revisiting on a very regular basis' 1930s the rise of Nazi power invading neighbor If they have famine in China due to drought n swine flu then Aussie land is in danger
This was an interesting one from earlier in the week hey
Pssst Don't tell Mr Morrison, but more than 70 countries have voiced their support for China's National Security Law for HongKong at the ongoing 44th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council being held in Geneva. He might not be happy to hear were on the outside again
Thoughtful, insightful article. It’s been interesting to see how regional countries such as Indonesia have endorsed Australian $260bn commitment to upgrade Defense capabilities. There’s nervousness about US retreat and China’s ascendancy
Morrison’s view of the world is completely at odds with the World Economic Forum wef latest risk rating on 3rd July where: Highest risk 68.6%: risk of prolonged global recession Lowest risk 2.3%: worsened long term military conflicts His military strategy is scaremongering.
Interesting parallel with KRudd. Enjoyed high polls numbers but loathed within his own party as a control freak with few friends.
He doesn't even think he/his party is a major factor in why we are even in this mess. FFS
Tojo cast democracy aside?
