Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a cabinet reshuffle with Nationals MPs named to new posts, including the key mining and resources ministry going to Queenslander Keith Pitt

amid internal Coalition disputes on coal and climate change.

Mr Pitt will enter cabinet with responsibility for coal and gas exports as well as the $5 billion Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund at a time when the government is hitting back at calls from climate activists to halt the exports over time.As expected, incoming Nationals deputy David Littleproud will take the agriculture and drought portfolio in a return to a ministry he has held in the past, replacing former deputy Bridget McKenzie.

Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack will retain the infrastructure and transport portfolio and has elevated some of the allies who helped him fend off a challenge from former leader Barnaby Joyce on Tuesday.Veterans' Affairs Minister Darren Chester will keep the portfolio but return to cabinet, reversing his demotion in December 2017 in a reshuffle forced by Mr Joyce before he, in turn, resigned as leader two months later.

Mr Chester keeps responsibility for veterans' affairs at a time when he is overseeing a royal commission into veterans' suicide, which was announced on Wednesday. The Coalition government has had five Ministers for Veterans' Affairs since it took power in September 2013: Michael Ronaldson, Stuart Robert, Dan Tehan, Mr McCormack and Mr Chester.

Littleproud returns to agriculture as Nationals change jobs in Morrison's new-look frontbenchNewly elected Nationals deputy leader David Littleproud will give up his water portfolio to return to agriculture, as part of Prime Minister Scott Morrison's new-look frontbench. God help us .... Hooray for the cotton farmers. Spent many years in the corporate world, along the way I learnt a lot about reading body language. I saw the vision following the Nats leadership vote, of Littleproud and McCormack. It was obvious to me McCormack is not long for that job. auspol
