Flinders University researchers are worried that the pygmy blue-tongue lizards of outback SA could be extinct within 50 years so they are taking unique steps to try to save them.

"There's a few degrees difference in the maximum temperatures, so the far-north gets a lot hotter than Tarlee does," he said.

"We want to know a few things about which ones are the best to move, what sort of combinations are best … and whether the ones from the far-north are going to cope with being moved south."Associate Professor Gardner said to ensure the survival of the relocated lizards, spiders living in the mid-north may have to be relocated to Tarlee as well to increase the number of burrows.

"We're also thinking about the potential of translocating some spiders to make the habitat more suitable for them, but what we'll do initially is put in artificial burrows," he said. "We get hard wooden dowel burrows that we put into the ground and they exist in the ground for about five years or so."Hopefully then there'll be enough recruitment of spiders to have the holes for them when the other ones perish."

Would have got more if they just asked for change rooms for their imaginary women’s rugby team.

Why not piss another paltry 400K up against the wall? The government and the well-paid, leftist Australian Public Service (a misnomer if ever there was one) know Taxpayers have more money than they know what to do with.

But what about paris?

I'm sure after surviving for a zillion yrs with desert temps ranging from -2C to 50C in one day the lizards will survive a temp rise of 2C.

KiwarrakRailie What a cutie.

Very pleased to hear that efforts are being made to relocate this little skink & applaud the efforts of all our scientists who are working hard to safeguard our wildlife

Far better than giving money to Yassmin Abdel-Magied

Ridiculous.. fools think money can control nature.

So all we need to do is move all climate threatened southern hemisphere spp. further south (& vice versa for northern hemisphere) & we can save a lot. Surely a better solution is to remove root causes of said climate change. How about a grant to remove the COALition, please.

So we should still have dinosaurs around us if no species is allowed to go extinct. We should minimise the harm but we should stop being naive about natural selection.
