Schools are bracing for unsettled behaviour from students as they readjust to social interaction and school routines after spending 16 weeks at home.
After last year’s nine-week lockdown, teachers in NSW noticed many students’ social skills had regressed and saw an increase in misbehaviour, conflict between peers and outbursts that continued for months after school resumed. “It comes down to a basic, trusting relationship. I’ve been here for 20 years, my families know me, I’ve taught some of the parents, I’ve even taught a grandparent, there’s a trust in the system and the school that we will do our very best.
ACU Associate Professor Miriam Tanti, the acting chair of education at the Australian Catholic University, said many reports had likened the impact of COVID to collective trauma. “Educators will witness anxiety, disruptive behaviour, separation anxiety in students who may not have exhibited these behaviours pre-pandemic,” she said.The stress and worry of parents can also influence their children.
