The parliamentary committee on migration is looking at ways to replace the 70,000 backpackers who typically pick up to 60 per cent of some fruit and vegetable crops but are missing from Australia's farms.

School leavers who spend a gap year picking fruit could get a discount on their university loans under a plan put forward by a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry.

Liberal, Nationals and Labor members of the committee endorsed proposals in its interim report including the idea of a "Gap Year at Home" program that would encourage school and university graduates to spend time doing agricultural and horticultural work.Committee chair Julian Leeser, a Liberal MP, said with far fewer jobs available in industries such as hospitality, following the harvest trail was a good alternative.

For the next year, the committee recommends, unemployed people who move to the country should be given one-off payments to help with accommodation and moving expenses and be allowed to keep their JobSeeker benefits even as they are being paid for farm work.

Just some suggestions: provide motel style accommodation with single beds (no bunks) at subsidised rates (no rip off sheds at exorbitant prices). Free transport to work sites and between farms in regions. Subsidised cooked meals of good nutritional value.

- No workplace protections - No minimum wage - Unscrupulous operators cheating workers by changing rates of pay and what they are paid on. Another thought bubble by elites. Dumb as fuck Australia.

What about the ones on the dole? They should be asked to work for the tax payer money they receive. School leavers will be busy trying to organise their future with studies & traineeships etc.

Mandatory army service 18-21

if there is no social security for the unemployed then people will have no choice and work at whatever jobs are available to survive (assuming you have 2 arms 2 legs and a sound mind of course)

Why don’t they send prisoners to do it?

Haha. Yeah nah

Job seeker. 1.5m of them

School leavers agree for an experienced, well thought out decision the bipartisanship committee should pick fruit and vegetables for a season before commenting.

The government should look at long term Jobseekers picking up this workload. If they want the welfare then earn it. Of course there are always the exceptions where it doesn't work. The government could subsidise the growers where they pay a % of the jobseeker payment. GladysB

I picked fruit all throughout my youth, good pocket money and I survived. It's good fun partying with people from all over the world.

Maybe the should do what they have studied for

As if! Too many happy sitting around at the beach on job keeper. Slash it and you may get some applicants COVIDVIC19

JobSeekers?

Geez. Then they’d have to pay real wages and entitlements and people would have to pay the real cost of producing food. Reckon that’d work?

“Gap” year? What 🐂💩. I finished school on a Friday and started work on the next Monday. 🙄🙄🙄

This is totally in the states ability to control let them fix it they don’t federal government help just the welfare

Replace them with people on the dole. Now conveniently titled Job Seeker (but not Finder). Take the minimum of 6-8 week job or lose the dole. Or we are too precious for that? I think we are since there is always the stupid taxpayer that can work to cover. Australia auspol

Maybe just get farmers to pay a legal wage for the work.

The perception of difficult accommodation arrangements, low pay and intimidation by experienced pickers all has to be addressed before Aussie kids will sign up for that. There needs to be a marketing campaign for what can provide a valuable income and life experience.

Farmers should pay decent wages. Supermarkets should pay decent prices for fruit. Shoppers should demand pickers have been properly paid to pick the fruit we buy

Yes, the boomers should absolutely commit the gen-whatever’s to a year of slavery. Marvelous plan.

It's almost as though shutting the economy down has serious consequences.

Try a, work for job keeper and job seeker, program

Take some recruiting forms along to a BLM or anti mask rally - should be plenty looking for work amongst those droogs!

All this ideas about who should be picking fruit , the National’s are so worried about the Farmers for once . Since their not doing anything constructive they should get in there and start picking .

MPs back proposal to give refugees residency for fruit pickingGovernment and opposition MPs say there is merit in a proposal to have refugees go bush to fill vital fruit and vegetable picking jobs as a pathway to residency. nickbonyhady Because they haven’t been through enough. Why not give them 2 years hard labour, in tough conditions with little pay and exploitative bosses. nickbonyhady GENUINE refugees I trust. Not Sudanese gang members. nickbonyhady Slave labour in exchange for residency? Everyone knows fruit picking pays shit money. Otherwise we’d all be out there doing it.

MPs back proposal to give refugees residency for fruit pickingGovernment and opposition MPs say there is merit in a proposal to have refugees go bush to fill vital fruit and vegetable picking jobs as a pathway to residency. In other words: indentured servitude. Disgraceful. This reeks of a form of slavery. Are the refugees to be detained in these areas while waiting for residency? Or they could pay viable wages in the current market
