Australian school children will be taught how Indigenous Australians experienced colonisation as an invasion, under draft changes to the national curriculum.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority released the draft changes to the national curriculum on Thursday, outlining a series of revisions for public consultation.

The changes come after a review by an ACARA advisory group found “outdated” ideas that did not reflect Indigenous Australians’ call for truth-telling since the arrival of Europeans, the authority added. The review said the current curriculum places “too much emphasis on the period prior to contact with Europeans, positioning First Nations Peoples of Australia as artefacts of the past”.

ACARA chief executive David de Carvalho said he expects some degree of debate and push-back around the changes. "It's obviously going to be contested, not just in this area but across other subjects as well. And that's a healthy thing that we have these debates."

LowitjaInstitut Civilisation could only come by invasion. 65,000 yrs. and not even a written language. Do we want to go back to savagery that existed here before we came? When children's heads were bashed against a tree prior to body being burnt for eating? Carl Lumholst 'Among Cannibals'.

Great news!

Absolutely. It is important as it’s part of Australian history

Teach the full history. Indigenous Australians along with the convicts of the convict era were both so tragically entwined in the colonialization of Australia.

Australian kids already learn about nothing else but Indigenous topics in school (History subject!). They neglect the world with it’s important history topics, and learn about insignificant events from Aboriginal “history”. Till when will kids in Australia be punished like this?

I guess the Aborigines would have been happier if they were colonised by China, or USA? I mean, they lived in primitive society, of course a much more developed nation would come and take their land. They should regret not having been civilised earlier!

So just common sense then? Hope this imitative won't fall into self-indulgent white guilt as usual.

Europeans weren’t invited in. How does ‘colonisation’ differ from what the Japanese Imperial Forces were seeking to achieve in WWII?

About time.

About time

Hope they also learn about everyday hardship white people endured in England and Europe at that time unless privileged by class or nobility ? These white people were the first refugees to arrive Australia followed by waves of Italian, Greek, Vietnamese..........

This is nothing new, I did an Indigenous unit back in the 1980s in a NSW Public High School. I also watch the Austn documentary 'A Lousy Little Six Pence' in the 1980s too.

Bout time!

The British brought nothing good ? If not the British, who ?

Good. Its part of Australian history is it not? It should be taught.

MSMWatchdog2013 Big step up from barely mentioning them in the education I got in Queensland in 50s and 60s.

mahootna2 Good!

It’s been well overdue!!!!

OMG Wait until Mark Latham hears about this First Nations history and gender fluidity in schools FFS he will need a straight jacket

Yes

Catching up to how we talk about it in this household

Its about bloody time.

I'm sure right wing heads are exploding. Bit weird the idea that history should cover both sides of a conflict and tell the truth.

How about just teach Darwin’s theory of evolution and learn a real lesson relevant to Australians more than ever today. Stone Age semi nomadic tribes well we all know what happens to them.

About time. Hopefully they will become as well versed in the key moments and figures in the frontier wars as their forebears are in those venerated in past ANZAC stories.

About time!

Finally. I will never forgive our education system for not teaching us facts.

Yep......they should be teaching how it feels to be a loser!

And in medical news the Great Mark Latham, as proclaimed by Alan Jones, has just gone into shock and will appear on Skyopinion every day for the next year from his hospital bed denouncing FNP as woke lefties who don't know what oppression is,'look at all the TV shows they're on'

Long overdue

Great

Certainly well overdue. Now, watch the white history ideologues try to stop it. We know who and what they are.

SBS They don't already?

About time. 👍❤️

About time! No such teaching came my way.

Long over due!

Good

And about time too

I went to school in SA in the 90’s and I remember being taught about the dispossession, massacres, slavery and the children being stolen in about grade 4-6 (‘94 to ’97) what’s changed here? We’re my teachers off script or has this been removed in the 25 years since I attended?

SBS Setting up another generation who will feel the guilt and shame for something they did not do, nor had any links with those that did. It's in the past, leave it there.

Just waiting for I'm not a racist but stoker_aj to voice her objection...

Bloody ridiculous

👏👏

FACT CHECK : BULLSHIT

SBS Long overdue! Looking forward to indigenous language being taught in each cultural area too!

Exactly, teach the truth. Do not skew the education.

Finally! Also if SBS could commission some documentaries about this history rather than showing endless British monarchy documentaries maybe the adult population could also be educated and finally understand the root of all the problems Indigenous Australians face daily.

FINALLY! They're barely doing the bare minimum!

SBS Invasion Better to call it progressive occupation.

Whitey = Bad Do they teach how Aboriginal tribes would have killed each other, like every group in history ?

Yeah let's taint all of history...

As long as our kids are not made to believe they don't belong.....

Good. Tell the truth about the invasion and colonisation.

As it should be. To be honest all of our kids already knew a lot about it. Would be good to contextualise with history of other colonization around the world & our region. Perhaps without loading a guilt burden on little kids who had nothing to do with dreadful acts of the past.

'EXPERIENCED colonization as an invasion'?! The country was invaded THEN colonized, there's nothing subjective about it!

Great news.

This is interesting.. we learned about the stolen generation. How the Chinese came over during the goldrush. I don’t think we learned how the indigenous Australians were treated during the invasion. As a parent I believe it’s important that the children learn this

I still have debates with older aged Australians because they barely know the true past of Australia's colonisation. This is so important, very glad it's happening.

Good. Long overdue.

As long as they also tell them just about many countries around the world has changed hands many times. Especially in Europe and the Middle East.

Finally I always told them the truth anyway how about Aboriginal and Torrens straight islander cultural studies as well ?!

This is excellent.

This is a good move. For the doubting Thomas’ out there that say this is divisive or a load of rot, the current History curriculum for the past 10 years already references colonial impacts on Indigenous Australians. This is a reconciliation development of what we have now.

How dare they spit lies and exaggerations disguised as empathy. I’m tired of these roads. French military officials are RIGHT NOW threatening civil war in France to stop the March of critical race theory. And soon enough it is not !

Ridiculous

good

dmounty14 The Truth The Whole TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH must be taught without any spin doctors of any changes, to create a palatable Rhetorical Narratives that COLONIAL SETTLERS had One Intent to not bind with First Nations Peoples but INVADED their existence !

Neutral about this. What’s past is past. Just like we can’t blame the German forever for the WW2 but it’s important to learn the facts re this way.

One hopes as a follow on of shifting from'colonisation' to 'invasion' will extend to a study of frontierwars then ongoing humanrights issues such as aboriginaldeathsincustody ; stolengenerations landrights nativetitle etc in the present tense indigenous aboriginal auspol

susanamet Finally! Thanks for the good news.

Australian school children will be taught how Indigenous Australians / first Australians experienced colonisation as an invasion. Last 120 years ruled by Australian political parties. That means,

About time.

WHAT A LOAD OF INDIGINOUS CROC CRAP, REWRITE HISTORY TO PLAY THE VICTIM CARD, THEY SOON FORGET AS THEY MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE CENTRELINK OFFICE.

Way to create an even bigger schism , you push people they will push back this will inspire a new wave of hatred between the races . Bravo you idiots

Brilliant. After reading Dark Emu, my whole perception of my white history changed. Australians need to know real Australian history. Not what white folk made up to not look so shit.😡 justbekind

Nonsense bullshit
