Already a subscriber?Shoppers are returning to Westfield Bondi Junction and foot traffic is back at levels seen before the horror attack that left six people dead last month, the mall’s owner says.
In an investor update, Scentre said customer visits across its properties increased to 175 million over the first 18 weeks of the calendar year, despite the attack and slowing consumer spending, an increase of 2.8 million, or 1.6 per cent, over the same period last year. Sales also increased by 2.4 per cent to $6.5 billion of sales during the first quarter.
Leighton Hunziker, a retail services director at commercial reality Savills, said shoppers were not viewing the Bondi Junction attack as an incident which had created persistent dangers at malls, leading to a quick rebound in foot traffic. Scentre’s focus on winning people’s time and attention by redeveloping its spaces to more events-based has also protected its mall assets from weaker spending.“Our business has performed very well in these kinds of conditions because, essentially, we’re free entertainment,” Mr Rusanow said in an interview on Thursday.
