The woman applied for the loan through what she believed was a legitimate lending business and was contacted via email to give personal details and pay an insurance fee. The scammers asked the woman for $1,240 in insurance and payment protection, and thinking it was a legitimate business, she complied. The scammers even sent the woman a bank receipt for the full loan amount, but when the funds never showed up, she realised she had been duped.

The scammers knew the woman was shopping online for a loan agency, going to various websites, so they targeted her email address a short time later.
