Santhi Soundarajan went from hero to outcast in the space of a week, after failing a gender test at the 2006 Asian Games. After 16 years, Santhi opens up about her painful journey, and what keeps her going.

Sixteen years ago, the tiny village of Kathakkurichi in Tamil Nadu, India erupted in joy after one of their own won silver in the 800 metres at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

Since then, life threw Soundarajan into the unknown. In the decade and a half since those Games, the former runner, now 41, has endured unimaginable pain, shame and hardship.A life changed forever "I grew up a normal girl wearing salwar kameez, skirt and a bindi [a decorative mark worn on the middle of the forehead by Indian women], long hair, flowers in my hair, bangles etc," she said."I don't want anyone to control me.

Sitting on chipped stairs at the Anna Stadium gallery, Soundarajan gave an emotional account on the hardships she faced and continues to face.

You are either male or female nothing else matters not matter what is cut off and tucked or replaced your dna and skeletal frame will tell you pretending does not work so you are either male or female pretend boobs does not make you a female with a penis get real need a brain

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

So ABC news...were you stipped of anything because you don't check what you post

$1.1Billion and ABC can't spell

Stripped

Ah yes, another intersex person of colour having their achievements being stripped from them because of the hatred and fear the Eurocentric governing bodies have for transgender and gender nonconforming people.

*stripped

Hang on a minute! The athlete has a male genotype, now has a male phenotype, and identifies as a male. But you keep referring to him as she and her? Is that for the sake of selling a story?

So a bloke in a shiela contest? Sounds like a cheat to me

This has really illustrated the perplexities of the human race, we know there are over 40 genetic variations on male or female makeup, will we get to a point where we are competing against a performance level, leaving gender out if it?

This is just so sad

If the person has CAIS they should be competing in women’s sports, if they have PAIS different story. You need your facts together.

I wish you’d read up on the specific intersex disorder before publishing stuff. There’s a difference between complete androgen insensitivity and partial androgen insensitivity.

Its stripped, with an 'r'. Not stipped. Can't believe you made that mistake twice. You should fire your spell checker.

Bahahaha

Whaahaahaaa

Should've studied harder
