Rust director Joel Souza, who was shot in the shoulder when Alec Baldwin accidentally discharged a gun containing live rounds, told authorities he was rehearsing for a scene when the weapon went off.

In a statement submitted to the New Mexico court, Souza, 48, described the moment the firearm went off.

He told police he saw Hutchins"complaining about her stomach and grabbing her midsection" before she"began to stumble backwards and she was assisted to the ground". He also confirmed to investigators he heard the film's assistant director, Dave Halls, yelling"cold gun" before handing the weapon over to Baldwin, meaning the firearm should have been empty.

Asked how Baldwin handled the firearm, Russell said the actor"had been very careful" and recalled an earlier instance when Baldwin"made sure it was safe and that a child wasn't near him when they were discharging a firearm during that scene".

'I don't hold Alec Baldwin responsible': Father of cinematographer accidentally killed on set defends actorActor Alec Baldwin consoles the husband and son of slain cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, as more reports of troubling on-set practices emerge and investigators focus attention on the film's armourer and assistant director. Of course he’s responsible. At two levels he is, one he was handed the gun and fired it. There is a responsibility of checking the gun and being adequately trained. second is he was a producer, so he is responsible for the goings on, on the film set, including unsafe practices Alec Baldwin is a lousy shot. He was aiming for the camera lens where the projectile would have lodged harmlessly somewhere inside the camera. Why is there even a threat of live ammunition in a gun on a movie set to begin with? Isn’t it all pretend? Nothing is real. It’s a movie!

I see the Baldwin fan club is out in numbers. Okay, so this chick is going to be crucified. And probably never work at her dream job again. Perhaps we need to step back a little and not rush to judge. Actually, that's good advice for a lot of things these days...

How Baldwin’s prop gun turned deadlyA movie armourer who allegedly laid out the loaded gun Alec Baldwin accidentally killed the cinematographer with had just completed her first film and worried “she wasn’t ready”. In Australia, you need training before buying a gun. In America, any idiot can have a gun. This is the result. Why would you even need live ammo on a film set?
