HE’S only 14, but Adelaide figure skater Andy Yao has already been described as an “artist on the ice” with talent beyond his years.

And next week he will debut on the world competition stage when he represents Australia at the International Skating Union’s Junior Grand Prix in Russia.

“I’ve coached him since seeing him skate at a general session at the IceArena six years ago, taking him from two-foot skating to his triples and next year it’s planned for him to be doing quads . It’s paying big dividends: he’s twice been invited to train at the US Olympic training facility in Colorado, and one of his competition routines has been devised by world-renowned choreographer Tom Dickson.“I love bringing the emotion into it and it’s just an escape for me from school and everything else.”

“I knew then he had something special so I said: ‘If you want to do figure skating, then I’d like to coach you,’,” Laidlaw recalled. “A lot of people think that skating is mainly physical, but competitive figure skating 85 per cent of it is mental: Throw your body in the air, twirl around three times and land on a skinny bit of silver metal? There are millions of little calculations that need to be done,” Laidlaw said.
