The RSL's West Australian branch has been labelled out of step, ignorant and racist for banning the Welcome to Country during the Anzac Day dawn service and Remembrance Day ceremony. 9News

"It is worth noting that our New Zealand partners embrace the language of their indigenous peoples at Anzac Day ceremonies. We should do the same."

Veterans Issues Minister Peter Tinley, who is a veteran, said Aboriginal people wore the uniform for 87 years before they were even counted as Australians. "The RSL has got it wrong and I'm appalled that in this day and age that they would be so prescriptive," he told reporters."This really hurts, this really strikes at the heart of reconciliation.

"I don't accept the concept that First Nation Australians, who have continuous occupation of this land for 50,000 years, are tagged into a multicultural bucket ... they have a very special part of our story."Getup's First Nations justice campaign director Larissa Baldwin described it as disgraceful and out of step."This racist decision erases the long history of national service by First Nations servicemen and servicewomen, both in peacetime and in war," she said.

"We know that Indigenous veterans have played an important role in our defence forces, right back to the Boer War, and the RSL has not forgotten this," he said.

Good decision. Should never have happened in the first place, but thankfully common sense has prevailed

Backlash from whom? No one I know. Just the usual whingers with help from media beat up

Why do people who have fought and or died for this country need a welcome to country.... get fucked

Ernie Dingo made that shit up with his mate... There's nothing historical or culturally significant about it.

I've listened to indigenous people and its pretty clear that whites are not welcome in their land. so what's with the welcome to country ceremonies?

RSL ban on Welcome to Country sparks backlashThe RSL's West Australian branch has been labelled out of step, ignorant and racist for banning the Welcome to Country during the Anzac Day dawn service and Remembrance Day ceremony. 9News ANZAC day is about remembering how our Diggers fought for a White Australia - so it's actually anti-White to even suggest to have a 'Welcome to Country' at such an occasion. It's not 'Racist' to celebrate the Men and Women who fought and died for a White Australia. The Welcome to Country ceremony is a load of BULLSHIT, it has nothing to do with Aboriginal heritage, culture, beliefs or Dreamtime, it is a modern day Aboriginal fairy tale invented by Ernie Dingo in 1976, welcoming a group of visiting Maoris, modern day Aboriginal sideshow act. JUST WHO - is doing tha Labelling? Is it C9 or simply small vociferous groups of snowflakes, misguided academics or plain ordinary 'trouble-makers'? Aboriginals are Australians - they do not need a different flag! Absolutely nothing to do with the vogue misnomer of racism.
